Why is it done?
Mrityunjaya Homa/Mrityunjaya Havan is performed for worshipping Lord Shiva who is also revered as destroyer of death. It is mainly performed for curing chronic illness and gaining healthy life, preventing untimely death, especially for those struggling on their death bed. Performing the Mrityunjaya homa reduces the chances of untimely death and rejuvenates the person who is fighting against death. In this homa the fire which is lit for the homam is not completely extinguished within the next 24 hours.
Things to take care of
While performing this homa 21 mantras are chanted. The prominent offerings of the homa consists of Durva grass and an herb called amrita. Durva grass is to purify the blood while the second is considered as medicine thus bestowing longevity of life for the devotee. The devotee should be with a clean body and mind. Wear clothes that are new. Be in utmost devotion during the prayer, do not let any external disturbances take away your attention.
Schedule the homa date during the Janma Nakshatra of the person who suffers from illness or for the person who is having the dosha in his/her horoscope.
