He is one of the only two Indians to win an individual Olympic gold medal apart from Abhinav Bindra, the youngest Indian gold medallist in an individual event and the only one to win gold in his Olympic debut.
Neeraj is also a Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO) in the Indian Army and has received the Vishisht Seva Medal (VSM), an Indian armed forces decoration awarded to him to recognize “distinguished service of a high order.” In 2017, Neeraj won gold in the Asian Athletics Championships throwing 85.23 meters. In the 2018 Commonwealth Games, he registered a throw of 86.47 meters in the men’s javelin throw competition, becoming the first Indian to win the javelin throw. In 2018, he received the Arjuna Award from Ram Nath Kovind, the President of India.

Neeraj was born to Satish Kumar and Saroj Devi on December 24, 1997, in Khandra village, Panipat district, Haryana. He has two sisters. Neeraj grew up in a traditional family primarily involved in agriculture. He graduated from Dayanand Anglo-Vedic College in Chandigarh and is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Arts from Lovely Professional University in Jalandhar.

As a young boy, he was teased by the local children for being overweight, which prompted his father to enroll Neeraj in a local gymnasium. He was later enrolled in a gym at Panipat, where he met some javelin throwers and got interested in the sport. He visited the Sports Authority of India (SAI) center at Panipat, where he met Jaiveer Choudhary, who recognized his talent in 2010 and became his first coach. After training under Chaudhary for a year, 13-year-old Neeraj was later admitted to the Tau Devi Lal Sports Complex in Panchkula, where he was taught by his coach, Naseem Ahmad, who trained him in long-distance running along with javelin throw.

In 2014, Neeraj won a silver medal, his first international medal, at the Youth Olympics Qualification in Bangkok. Following this, he achieved a world-record throw of 81.04 meters in the junior category of the 2015 All India Inter-University Athletics Meet. It led to Neeraj receiving a call back for the national training camp in 2015. In early 2016, he left Panchkula to train at NIS, Patiala, and went on to win the gold medal at the 2016 South Asian Games with a throw of 84.23 meters equalling the Indian national record.

In 2016, he won the gold medal in the IAAF World U20 Championships in Poland. As a result, the Indian Army offered Neeraj a direct appointment as a Junior Commissioned Officer in the Rajputana Rifles in the rank of Naib Subedar, and he was formally inducted as a JCO in December 2016. He subsequently received leave to continue his training.

Neeraj won a gold medal in the 2017 Asian Athletics Championships and registered a season-best effort of 86.47 meters in the 2018 Commonwealth Games. In 2018, he set a new world record and won the first gold for India in the javelin throw at the Asian Games. However, he missed the 2019 World Championships due to bone spurs in his right elbow and underwent surgery in Mumbai in May 2019, a day after the qualifying competitions for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics had begun. After the recuperation period, he traveled to South Africa in November 2019 to train under German biomechanics expert Kalus Bartoneitz. He has also been previously coached by Gary Calvert, Werner Daniels, and Uwe Hohn. He returned to international competition in January 2020 after a 16-month hiatus with a winning throw of 87.86 meters in the Athletic Central North West League Meeting in South Africa, which qualified him for the Tokyo Olympics.
Later, Neeraj traveled to Turkey for training but had to return to India in March 2020 due to the COVID-19 Pandemic. He spent the year training at NIS Patiala. On March 5, 2021, Neeraj broke his national record with a new throw of 88.07 meters, ranking him third-best internationally. He opened his international season of 2021, throwing 83.18 meters and winning a gold medal at an event in Lisbon, Portugal.

Winning the gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics, Neeraj became the first Indian Olympian to win a gold medal in athletics and the second Indian to win an individual Olympic gold medal after Abhinav Bindra, who won the gold medal in men’s 10-meter air rifle in 2008 Summer Olympics. Neeraj dedicated his Olympic win to sprinter Milkha Singh.
