What is Tithi?

A tithi is a lunar day. It is the time taken by the Moon to travel 12 degrees in the sky. Due to the relative motion of the Sun and the Moon, the length of a tithi can vary from 21.5 hours to up to 24 hours. There are 30 tithis in a lunar month including Poornima and Amavasya. The tithis are divided into Shukla Paksha tithis and Krishna Paksha tithis, with 15 tithis making for each Paksha.

Tithis in Vedic astrology

The Moon represents emotions in Vedic astrology. In many cultures, the Moon is given more importance than the Sun, and the Moon calendar is followed while deciding day-to-day activities. The movement of the Moon in the heavens results in 30 tithis, including Poornima and Amavasya in a lunar month. Each tithi is identified by the shape of the Moon that is visible in the sky on that day.

The Tithis are further divided into five - Nanda, Bhadra, Jaya, Rikta, and Poorna.

  • Nanda Tithi - Pratipada, Shashti, and Ekadashi are called Nanda Tithi. These dates are considered auspicious for business and construction.
  • Bhadra tithi - Dwitiya, Saptami, and Dwadashi are called Bhadra Tithis. This date is considered auspicious for purchase.
  • Jaya tithi - Tritiya, Ashtami, and Trayodashi are called Jaya Tithi. This is the tithi of victory.
  • Rikta Tithi - Chaturthi, Navami, and Chaturdashi are Rikta Tithis. This is the tithi to get rid of things.
  • Poorna Tithi - Panchami, Dashami, and Purnima dates are called Poorna Tithi. All kinds of auspicious works are done on these dates.

Apart from these five, there is also Suniya Tithi which is not suited to carry out any kind of work.

The Suniya Tithis are as follows - Chaitra Krishna Ashtami, Vaishakh Krishna Navami, Jyestha Krishna Chaturdashi, Jyeshtha Shukla Trayodashi, Ashada Krishna Shashthi, Shravan Krishna Dwitiya and Tritiya, Bhadrapada Krishna Pratipada and Dwitiya, Ashwin Krishna Dashami and Ekadashi, Kartik Krishna Panchami and Shukla Chaturdashi, Aghan Krishna Saptami, and Ashtami, Paush Krishna Chaturthi and Panchami, Magh Krishna Panchami, and Magh Shukla Tritiya.

Krishna Paksha and Shukla Paksha

Krishna Paksha or the waning phase is the fortnight between the Full Moon (Poornima) and the New Moon (Amavasya). There are fifteen tithis in Krishna Paksha.

The Shukla Paksha or the Waxing Phase is the fortnight from New Moon (Amavasya) to the Full Moon (Poornima). There are fifteen tithis in the Shukla Paksha.

Tithi calculator

The birth Tithi can be calculated using date, time, and place of birth. An individual's birth tithi has a lot of influence on his/her life and personality. The Tithi should never be overlooked when identifying auspicious and inauspicious muhurats.

Trying out the free kundalis of various online companies is a hobby of mine. Clickastro free kundali is okay. There is nothing particularly unique or outstanding. That most of the report is blurred is a bit of a bummer. But I like the content on display. It is fun to read and also quite accurate. If you are planning to purchase a full report, I say go ahead.

Getting an online marriage prediction report is not a problem these days. But their quality varies. If you want to buy a decent prediction report with good quality though the price is a bit higher, then Clickastro is your best option. The reports are comprehensive, accurate and fairly simple as well. It also carried remedies for doshas if any. The best part is you can consult an astrologer for a more detailed analysis through the same platform itself.

The best Jathagam report I have ever purchased is the Tamil Jathagam from Clickastro. I love the way they have designed the report and also its description style. But it took a long time for me to get the physical report, to the extent that I had given up on it. Also, they should check on their customer relations' personnel. The one whom I got was very curt.
