Mars in Cancer Unleashes Destruction
Mars, the fiery planet, usually takes around 45 days to transit to the next sign. Unusually, this time, Mars stayed in Cancer for more than seven months, from 5thOctober 2009 to 26thMay 2010.
Mars in astrology represents adventurous deeds, military, terror, thieves, accidents, fire, fights, blood, weapon, extreme sexual drive, medicine, law suits, secrets, enemies, poison, the color red, cruelty, stones, land, strength of the body, prestige, metals, etc. As per Mundane Astrology (concerned with countries, climatic changes, nature, etc.) it is associated with natural calamities, terrorist acts, wars, big fires, pirates, train accidents and mishaps. The presence of Mars in a sign for 45 days is dangerous, so one can imagine the horrific impact of its presence for more than seven months in a sign. And if the sign is Cancer then it becomes a classic recipe for disaster. Cancer is the sign of debilitation for Mars; which means that it brings out its worst fiery nature. Cancer is a watery sign which makes Mars very uncomfortable. This time, the hot Mars started on its destructive path by bringing severe drought, draining away the rivers and lakes. Even as this scribe is writing this piece, news reports are coming in of an air crash in Mangalore which took the lives of 158 people. This tragic disaster comes in the wake of hurricane 'Laila' which has devastated the coastal areas of Andhra Pradesh.
The fiery planet, Mars, and the watery sign, Cancer, together brings in a new dimension. As per astrology, when a fiery Mars comes into a fiery sign, it is predicted to cause devastating fires and accidents. When a fiery Mars joins an airy sign it is known to cause plane accidents; whereas in earthy signs it is predicted to manifest its presence in the form of volcanic eruptions and earth quakes. And when Mars comes into a 'watery' sign like Cancer, destruction will be in the form of piracies, tsunami and floods. Destruction will have some connection with water forms. Consider this; the terrorist attack at Mumbai on 26thof November 2008 saw the terrorists coming in from the sea. Mars was posited in Scorpio, a watery sign, with Mercury and Sun. Mercury in Scorpio shows the nature of a youth, full of vengeance. Mars entered Cancer on 5thOctober 2009 and started its transit at a slow pace, receiving the cold andsatwikaspect of Jupiter till 20thDecember 2009. Jupiter moved to the eighth house from Cancer and Mars started its retrograde motion from 21stonwards, unleashing its complete destructive force. The earthquake in Haiti on 12thof January was the first of a series of disasters claiming more than 2 lakh innocent lives and affecting more than 30 lakh. (The day has some astrological importance as well –Mruthyubhagaof Mars in Cancer is 23rddegree and on this day Mars was posited in 22.7 degrees in retrograde motion). Next, tragedy struck Chile in the form of earthquake and tsunami. Again on March 24thearthquakes shook parts of China and Tibet. The quakes in Quinghai province in China on 14thApril took the lives of 2300 people. China comes under the sign, Cancer, as per Mundane Astrology. China suffered a lot on account of mine accidents too. (Mars was in Cancer for more than seven months in 1931 when the biggest flood in history happened. The yellow river, Huang He in China flooded, taking the lives of around 40 lakh people.)
In Europe, most airports were forced to cancel their flights for few days due to 'ash clouds' in the middle of April. Initially it was a series of small volcanic eruptions in IceLand which resulted in floods and the fumes converted into ash clouds. Scientists are of the opinion that this phenomenon may create new epidemics in the future. This reiterates the destruction caused by the fiery nature of Mars in a watery sign, Cancer. Earlier, volcanic eruption in snow clad Tibet resulted in snow floods on 24thMarch 2010. More than 200 ship piracies were reported worldwide in the last six months. In North India, Naxalites disrupted train services, hijacked trains and slaughtered army men.
Let us examine what provocated the fiery planet to cause disasters of such horrific proportions. Mars's most malefic debilitated position is 28 degree in Cancer. Hurricane Laila and the Mangalore air crash, both occurred when Mars was on the ascending part of the dangerous 28thdegree, between 27 and 28 degree, and constellation wise it was posited in the last quarter of Ayilyam (aslesha star), a very dangerous position. Only few and important disasters have been stated above. Let us hope that Mars has by now exhausted its terrible force.
Prior to this, the fiery planet has transited in Cancer sign for more than seven months during 1977-78 resulting in a cyclone which claimed more than 11000 lives in Andhra Pradesh and the flooding of the rivers, Ganga and Yamuna which affected many north Indian cities including Delhi and claimed1500 lives. Another 231 people were killed in a plane crash in the coastal area near Mumbai.
Mars in Cancer has certain positive effects too. In nativity horoscope, Mars in Cancer is considered as good as it givesneechabhanga rajayoga. It is believed that a debilitated Mars is better than exalted Mars in giving positive results.Neechabangameans 'the native has to struggle much but he can enjoyrajayoga in the end. So if in a horoscope, Mars is favorably posited, the present planetary situation might have given him much courage and ways to win over the difficulties in life. This can be best seen in the case of the great cricketer, Sachin Tendulkar who made his comeback with huge centuries when Mars was in retrograde motion. There are many people who have gained in this period. But health wise this position of Mars may prove dangerous.
As per Mundane Astrology, whenever Mars transits to fiery signs, Aries, Leo and Sagittarius, something big happens. The sign Leo represents kings or the heads of government, cinema field, amusement parks, castles, play grounds, gambling houses, forests, etc., and Mars represents atrocities, terrorist activities, accidents, military, and border security. Thus when the troublesome Mars travels through the royal sign, Leo, the world witnesses problems of a different nature. Terrorists or anti-social elements become more active. Many military coups and terrorist activities have happened when Mars was transiting in Leo. Accidents at tourist spots like the one in Thekkady, train accidents, death of famous political and film personalities, volcanic eruptions, epidemics, fire in forests, drought, a hot climate, etc., are likely to happen in this period. July 13thto 20thseems to be the most dangerous period which may witness some more destruction.
In nativity horoscopes, this is going to be a good period. Matters could be done in a positive way as Mars and Sun (the ruler of the sign Leo) are relatives. So Mars will bestow good results to those who are having Mars in favorable planet. Mars transits to Virgo on 20thof July.
